박정만은 첫 시집 ≪잠자는 돌≫(1979) 이래 생전의 마지막 시집 ≪슬픈 일만 나에게≫(1988), 그리고 ≪박정만 시화집≫(1988)과 유고 시집인 ≪그대에게 가는 길≫(1988) 등 광기로 써 내려간 열 권의 시집에 이르기까지 시에 ‘취해’ 살아왔다.
그는 1970∼1980년대에 걸쳐 독특한 서정의 영역을 개척한 시인으로, 길지 않은 생애 동안 다양한 시의 양상을 보여 주면서 특유의 시 세계를 형성한 시인이다. 이러한 시 세계는 시인이 겪은 이른바 ‘한수산 필화 사건’이라는 충격적인 사건을 기점으로 보다 선명하게 제시되고 있다.
이 사건 이후 고전 정신을 계발하던 시인의 내면은 시대의 폭력성에 대한 울분으로 가득 차기도 하고, 생래적 고독감이 심화되어 허무감에 젖기도 하는 등 점차 비극적 서정으로 변모하는 모습을 보여 준다. 이 과정에서 시인은 무어라 설명하기 힘든 광기에 사로잡혀 때로는 섬뜩한, 때로는 청승맞은 편편의 시를 장식해 나갔다. 광기로 써 내려간 비극적인 서정의 밑변에는 토속적인 가락이 절묘하게 결합되어 서정시의 백미를 보여 준다. 박정만만큼 서정과 가락을 섬세하고 감각적으로 벼려, 청신하고 영롱한 시를 쓴 시인은 흔치 않다.
물질의 논리 속에서 서정의 세계를 깊이 있게 개척해 인간의 깊숙한 곳에 묻어 둔 감성을 끄집어 낸 그는 개성적 서정 미학의 세계를 구축한 것으로 보인다. 무엇보다 그가 이성적 사유 영역을 벗어나 ‘광기’를 통해 정신적 내부 세계를 보여 준 점은 현대 시를 이해하는 지평을 넓혀 주면서 동시에 현대 시의 새로운 연구 영역에 놓인다는 점에서도 중요하다..
